Some towing companies operate without necessary equipment or insurances, as well as charging customers unnecessary costs in exchange for services on the spot, due to the nature of the service generally being needed at a stressful moment.
These companies depend on the fact that you’re willing to pay whatever to get yourself out of a difficult situation and, in doing so, give towing services from reputable companies a bad reputation.
However, it’s important to note that the towing industry is heavily regulated and this applies to pricing as well.
Queensland towing companies are required to stick to a certain price range in accordance with the law – making it easier for you to trust our services.
You can read on below to find out more about towing costs in Queensland to better prepare yourself for when you need to organise accident towing in Queensland asap.
How much does towing cost in QLD?
In Queensland, tow truck companies are governed by Tow Truck Act and Tow Truck Regulation. Guidelines concerning price came about in 2017 after the Queensland Government commissioned an independent investigation into the towing industry.
This investigation was prompted by a rise in customer complaints and culminated in the amendments being made to the 1973 Tow Truck Act and 2009 Tow Truck Regulation.
We recommend referring back to these government regulations should you feel that you’re being overcharged by a towing operator. However, here is some general information to consider regarding different fees for a standard tow to keep you informed:
Call-out fees
Call-out fees are prohibited under Queensland regulations. This means that towing operators aren’t to incur fees relating to the following actions:
- Travelling to the location of a vehicle
- Locating the owner of the vehicle
- Incidental fees
- Giving a vehicle owner access to their vehicle at the holding yard within business hours
Crash towing maximum fee
A standard tow following a crash amount to $405.30 for the first 50 km. This price then increases by $8.05 for each kilometre afterwards. You and the operator will agree upon a destination prior to setting off so you can have a general understanding of prices.
Vehicle owners are also entitled to 60 minutes of working time at the scene of a crash, in which operators work to load your vehicle onto the tow truck and clean up any debris.
Private parking maximum fees
The maximum private parking towing amount includes a $260.25 fee to release your vehicle from the holding yard. If you manage to reach your vehicle before it is towed but otherwise still secured, you can pay up to $156.15 for onsite release.
If you’re unable to attend to your vehicle straight away, it amounts $26.00 per day on storage fees – which are added to the original $260.25 release fee. Your vehicle is permitted 72 hours in holding with any towing company.
